Craig Murray was unsurprisingly sacked from his position as ambassador in 2004, following his first public allegations that the British government relied on torture in Uzbekistan for intelligence.
It was not illegal because our legal advisers had decided that under the United Nations convention against torture, it is not illegal to obtain or use intelligence gained from torture as long as we didn’t do the torture ourselves.
I think it is important to keep in mind when thinking about stories like these, who the aggressor is. Not surprisingly, in all of these cases, whether it be mass murder and torture of Jews in the second World War, the slaughter of millions of Vietnamese people or the victims of this particular case, the aggressor is, and has always been, statism. Governments are an evil institution with no regard for human rights whatsoever. They are the true parasites of mankind and we should recognize them for what they really are. In the 20th century alone, governments have been responsible for over 262 million deaths (source).
